BIDS community review for BEP022: MR Spectroscopy

Dear all,

We are pleased to announce the community review period for BEP 022 - MR Spectroscopy (MRS)!

This BIDS Extension Proposal extends the BIDS standard to include MRS. We have developed the extension to align with the current community consensus on MRS data and metadata terminology and organization while also matching as closely as possible and appropriately with the BIDS’s guidelines for MRI techniques.

The community review period is open from June 3 - June 14, 2024.

We’re following a new procedure this time, attempting to use GitHub discussions to provide a more coherent, threaded experience. To review this BEP, please visit Community Review: BEP022 - MR Spectroscopy · bids-standard/bids-specification · Discussion #1846 · GitHub . Carefully read the procedure and then provide your review. Note that your vote, once cast, cannot be changed. (To create a GitHub account, visit Join GitHub · GitHub)

The draft specification may be found at Brain Imaging Data Structure 1.10.0-dev.
The proposed changes may be found at [ENH] BEP022 - Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy by markmikkelsen · Pull Request #1377 · bids-standard/bids-specification · GitHub.

Thank you for helping BIDS to be a useful resource for a growing community of researchers.

Sincerely,
Mark and the BIDS Maintainers

This is a super-short review period TBH - it is possible to request an extension?

One point of feedback that I have (and plan to submit) is the proposed label for the water reference scans - I believe we originally proposed _ref as the suffix for those scans and have since set up the HBCD study processing pipeline accordingly, but now I saw it’s been changed to _mrsref. Was there a particular reason to do that?

I believe an extension would be up to the BIDS Maintainers and Steering Group. I’m not quite sure what their procedure for such is, but I think it occurs if there is a critical issue that needs addressing.

Yes, we did have it as _ref before. There was a conversation about changing it to _mrsref that I don’t quite recall. Lemme look back at my notes/emails to see if I can find it! But yes, please comment on the GitHub Discussion page.

Thanks for the feedback!

@admin, this is the link to the convo Chris and I had about the _ref suffix.

Essentially, because we’ve had to assimilate with the rest of BIDS, and since there is already a _sbref suffix for single-band references for DWI/EPI, _ref was deemed too general, so we changed it.

However, please let me know if there is anything you have major concerns about, and the BIDS Maintainers and I will discuss it (if appropriate).
